The pooja is traditionally performed when a new vehicle — whether a car, bike, truck, auto, or any other mode of transport — is brought home for the first time. It is believed that consecrating the vehicle with sacred rituals purifies it, removes negative energies, and ensures the safety and well-being of all who travel in it.

In Kerala and across South India, Vahana Pooja holds deep cultural significance and is performed on auspicious occasions such as Vijayadasami (Ayudha Pooja), new year days, and personally auspicious dates chosen by an astrologer. The ritual involves the decoration of the vehicle with flowers and sacred symbols, followed by prayers and the tying of a sacred thread for ongoing protection.
